Traditions

I love holiday traditions of all kinds, from the tradition of opening one gift from my parents on Christmas Eve, to the orange and cinnamon rolls on Christmas Morning, and the Jell-O ribbon salad at Christmas dinner. In general, I am a big fan of family traditions. One of my favorite family traditions is the taking of pictures! Of course, I’m a picture fanatic altogether so I guess it makes sense:)

Christmas has always been a time of many, many photos. Some photos are candid (these photos are always taken by my Grandma Thomas and usually showcase people opening their mouths to take bites of Christmas dinner, etc.) and some pictures are posed (usually taken by my mother.) Though the candid photos are something that no one in the family will ever forget about Grandma T., I prefer the posed pictures. In the last few years, as our immediate family has grown, with the addition of my husband, Aaron, and my sister-in-law, Jen, we have even started taking pictures in traditional poses and places. The traditional poses are…

Aaron and me in front of the fireplace in the dining room:

Nick, Jen, Aaron, and Me stair-stepped in front of the bookcase that was made by my Great-Grandpa Thomas in the front entry-way: (Note: we are always in the same order)

A “fun” picture of Nick, Jen, Aaron, and Me stair-stepped in front of the bookcase: (sometimes we do the “walk like an Egyptian” arms, at Easter we wear bunny ears, and this year we just leaned opposite directions in true Brady-Bunch style.)

Though these traditional pictures may seem corny to some people, and annoy others (mainly Nick, when we say “it’s picture time” which is always followed by Nick grumbling at us) they are still memories that I will treasure forever. I love knowing that as our family continues to grow we will get to watch the traditional poses take new shape. Someday we will all be holding children in our pictures, and eventually those children will stand next to us in pictures, and finally we will be stair-stepping our children and we will be taking pictures of them. And so begins another family tradition!
